Combined Science vs Triple Science: What Parents Should Know

The difference between GCSE Combined Science and Triple Science, how much extra content is involved, and how to decide.
Schools offer GCSE Science in two main routes. Understanding the difference helps parents support the right choice rather than worry about the label.
Combined Science
Combined Science covers Biology, Chemistry and Physics and is awarded as two GCSE grades. It is a complete, respected science qualification and is accepted for many A-Level Science courses, subject to the grades a sixth form requires.
Triple Science
Triple Science, sometimes called Separate Sciences, awards three separate GCSEs and includes additional content in each subject. It suits students who enjoy Science and are considering A-Levels in the subject, but it also means more content to learn across the same timetable.
How to decide
Consider the student's current attainment, workload across their other subjects, and their post-16 intentions. Neither route closes doors on its own; strong grades matter more than the label. Speak to the school's science department, who know the student's day-to-day performance.
