How to Revise for GCSE Science

A practical, step-by-step approach to revising GCSE Biology, Chemistry and Physics without simply re-reading notes.
Most students revise GCSE Science by reading their notes from beginning to end. It feels productive, but it rarely produces the recall and application that examination questions demand. Effective revision is active: you should be retrieving information, applying it and correcting mistakes.
Start with the specification
Download the specification for your examination board and use it as a checklist. Mark each statement as secure, partly understood or unfamiliar. This turns a vague subject into a finite list of topics and shows precisely where to spend time.
Use retrieval practice
Close the book and write down everything you can remember about a topic, then check it against your notes. The gaps you find are exactly what to revise next.
- Short, frequent sessions beat long, occasional ones.
- Revisit a topic after a few days, then after a fortnight.
- Speak explanations aloud as though teaching someone else.
Practise required practicals and maths skills
Required practicals and mathematical skills carry substantial marks and are frequently under-revised. Learn each practical's method, variables and sources of error, and practise rearranging equations, converting units and interpreting graphs.
Work through past papers properly
Complete papers under timed conditions, mark them with the mark scheme, and record every mark lost with the reason. Reviewing that record is where the improvement actually happens.
