How to Use Past Papers Effectively

Past papers are the most useful revision resource available — provided they are used as a diagnostic tool rather than a score.
A past paper completed, marked and forgotten teaches very little. A past paper completed, marked and analysed can reshape an entire revision plan.
Three stages
Treat every paper as a three-stage process rather than a single sitting.
- Attempt the paper under timed conditions, without notes.
- Mark it honestly against the official mark scheme, noting the command word in each question.
- Categorise every lost mark: knowledge gap, misread question, technique, or time.
Act on the analysis
Knowledge gaps go back into revision. Technique problems are fixed by studying mark schemes and examiners' reports. Timing problems are fixed by practising question types against the clock, not by working faster in general.
